Youth aDAPT: Introduction to understanding Diversity
Youth aDAPT was created for youths to gain experience and awareness about people living with both apparent and non-apparent disabilities.
This age-appropriate program fosters compassion, empathy, and dignity as youths gain awareness of how challenging everyday tasks can be for others.
Emphasis is placed on language being a powerful tool that can be used to build each other up or tear each other down. Youths are encouraged to consider their chosen words and the impact of those words on others.
No two people do things the same way - even if they have the same diagnosis. We are all unique individuals who are good at some things and not as good at others.
People living with a disability learn alternative ways to aDAPT to their surroundings; not everyone’s body or brain works the same.
In teaching youths about people living with disabilities, Diverse Abilities Programs and Training (aDAPT) strives to remove barriers to equality, creating a future that is more equitable and accessible to all.
BIO: The onset of progressive blindness 30+ years ago spurred me to educate myself on how I could live a full life without full vision. Meaningfully sharing this knowledge with others in a manner that promotes kindness, equality, dignity, and our humanity is my mission.
